Chapter 16

“So now what?” Jacob asked. He had the television on across the office and had unloosed his tie. A cardboard container of sesame chicken with broccoli perfumed the air with garlic and ginger. It was dark outside, and the lights of the city provided a measure of comfort he could appreciate, even when he had to work late.

Across his desk, Joan stirred sugar into her hot tea. “We’ll let law enforcement take it from here.” She picked up the plastic fork and stabbed a piece of chicken, sitting back nibbling on it. He’d offered to order something for her, but the rail thin attorney insisted she wasn’t hungry. Clearly, she’d changed her mind.

Jacob rose and went to the credenza across the room, fetching a paper plate. He returned and used his chopsticks to portion out some for her. He pushed the plate her way, and she didn’t protest. “So, what do we do next?”

“We need to make sure we’ve covered our asses,” she said. “I’ve got the team going through all our records and making sure we’ve documented everything. We have to be able to show the company was not involved in any nefarious activities. We have to disavow — and prove that we had no knowledge of Eric’s behavior. We’ll look into everyone else’s performance, just to make sure there are no issues that might bite us in the butt. We’ll prepare a defense, just in case, but that may be a bit premature. The most important thing is to keep our mouths shut and keep everything confidential. Your job is to continue to support the families of our missing team and to be the compassionate face of the Network in front of the media. We’re going to look at the facts and take the time to check and double check everything.”

“And you’re sure the Exploration Channel has no financial or legal ownership of any island in the Atlantic?” He asked watching her make short work of half of his dinner.

“That’s one of the things the team is double checking, but preliminary findings indicate we do not ... one of us would have had to sign for any kind of purchase like that.” She tugged off her glasses as she chewed a bite, her gaze drifting upward as she thought. “That’s not the kind of thing someone can sweep under the rug, you know.”

“Is it possible we’ve had an island in our holdings since before I took over the corporation?”

“I find that unlikely,” she said. “My father was chief legal counsel before I was promoted. That was just about the time you took over as CEO, and we’ve been through three audits since then. I think we’d know if we owned an island.”

“Who signed for the Explorer of the Deep?” Jacob asked between bites. The chicken was tough and didn’t go down easily.

Joan lay her fork aside and sifted through her notes. A moment later, she found the page. “Everett did,” she said, tapping the note with a neatly manicured nail.
